Starting Cornerbacks – Anthony Averett and Trevon Diggs

Minkah Fitzpatrick can play any of the six secondary positions making him a wildcard in 2017. Where Minkah lines up on a given play will determine who else will be in the game and where they will play.

Averett is a lock at one corner slot. Trevon Diggs is making progress to gain the same status. Diggs struggled in the A-Day game but has had a great fall camp. Diggs is the other cornerback starter unless it becomes Minkah in some situations.

Given past playing time, Levi Wallace is the logical backup at corner. Other backup corners are Nigel Knott and Jared Mayden.

Safety – Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison or Hootie Jones

Minkah and Ronnie Harrison are a solid starting combo at safety. At safety, Fitzpatrick will continue his defensive play-calling role. Backup at safety will be provided by the experienced Jones and sophomore Deointe Thompson.

Star and Money – Tony Brown and Ronnie Harrison

The fifth defensive back will be Tony Brown at the Star position. Brown’s backup at Star is likely to be Shyheim Carter. Money in the dime defense will likely be played by Jones or Ronnie Harrison or Minkah. Harrison is the most physical player in the secondary and has played the position.
