Alabama Football: Projected Depth Chart after fall camp scrimmages
By Ronald Evans
Punter – J.K. Scott
J.K. Scott is one of the best punters in the nation. He should be a lock to win the Ray Guy Award. He may handle kickoffs as well.
Placekicker – J.K. Scott and Andy Pappanastos
Andy Pappanastos’ A-Day performance likely pushed him No. 3 on the depth chart. In the first scrimmage of fall camp, the field goal-kicking was poor. Alabama football fans worried the position would be a big weakness in 2017.
The second fall camp scrimmage did much to reassure Tide fans. It now looks as though Pappanastos will handle the under 40-yard kicks and Scott will take care of the long-range duty.
Freshman Joseph Bulovas could still win a starting role. If not his big leg may lead to success in future seasons.
Long Snapper – TBD
The true freshman Thomas Fletcher earned an Alabama football scholarship and at his position that should make him a starter. However, Fletcher has not won the job yet and is competing with walk-on Scott Meyer.
Holder – Tua Tagovailoa
It is traditional with Nick Saban that backup quarterbacks be holders.
Punt Returners – TBD
Trevon Diggs or Xavian Marks are the likely returners based upon experience. One of the less used running backs could earn this job, as could speedster Henry Ruggs.
Kick Returners – TBD
We expect along with Diggs and Marks, Henry Ruggs and Najee Harris are also options.
Other gifted athletes will shine in special teams roles. Dylan Moses, Ben Davis and Vandarius Cowan will join Mack Wilson as key special teams contributors.

It takes more than first-teamers to win a championship. Even Nick Saban’s published depth charts are a work in progress. Watching the up and down moves in the depth chart will be interesting throughout the season.
