Friday afternoon Alabama football worked outside in full pads on a very hot, late summer day. Check out the latest update, including insight into three Tide players.

For anyone not living near West Alabama, an August thermometer that reads 90 degrees, means the heat feels like 97 or 98 degrees. Donned in full pads Friday afternoon, Alabama football players battled through a scorcher.

Practice Notes

  • As expected Josh Jacobs was again slowed by injury. There has been no announcement of his availability for FSU but we guess he is not likely to play.
  • Najee Harris has been slightly banged up but we expect the freshman to have more than spot duty against the Noles

Practice Rumors

  • While we are not expecting a two-QB plan, Tua has a few packages he has practiced with the first team offense.
  • J. K. Scott will punt, kick long field goals and handle kickoffs. We hope J. K. can boom those kickoffs out of the end zone. Having the nation’s best punter get injured while tackling on a kickoff return is a dreary proposition.
  • Jedrick Wills is getting some practice reps with the first group offensive line.

Friday was both the 20th preseason practice and day two of preparation for FSU. Players still battling to start or join the two-deep rotation have one or two more sessions to solidify their depth chart status.

Remaining Position Battles for Starters

  • Other than special teams, the only first team starting position still in contention is right tackle. We think Saban’s Monday depth chart will define right tackle as Matt Womack or Jedrick Wills.
  • There may be another ‘or’ situation at defensive end. Most insiders expect Raekwon Davis will be the starter opposite Da’Shawn Hand. Isaiah Buggs and Quinnen Williams are close behind Davis.
  • Either Cam Sims or Jerry Jeudy will start at slot receiver and will rotate against FSU.

Alabama football will practice again Saturday afternoon. After a long, hot camp, Sunday is expected to be either a day off or a walk-thru. Monday is the day Saban annually lectures the Alabama football nation that depth charts are subject to daily change. The typical game week schedule would make Tuesday full pads again.
