Alabama Football Recruiting: Update on top defensive prospects
By Ronald Evans
Defensive Tackle
The old Tide nemesis, NFL-attrition will hit the Alabama football defensive line again in 2018. Across the defensive line, Payne (barring a shock) and Hand will be gone. Josh Frazier and Jamar King will exit as well. If Isaiah Buggs has a few more games as he did against the Aggies, he could leave early as well.
Alabama football needs 6 defensive linemen in the 2018 class. The Tide has verbals from three ends: 4-Stars, Cameron Latu, Jordan Davis and Stephon Wynn. Latu and Davis could become Jack linebackers.
So far the Tide has no 2018 defensive tackles.
Tackle Prospects
- Coynis Miller – DT; 4-Star; No. 15 DT and No. 163 Overall. Miller is from Alabama and is a Crimson Tide fan since childhood. For a few months, he has said Florida is his leader. Miller will announce on October 14 and most recruiting insiders expect him to pick Auburn.
UPDATE: As expected Miller announced his commitment to Auburn on Saturday morning. More on Miller at the end of this post.
- Bobby Brown – DT; 4-Star; No. 14 DT and No. 163 Overall. Brown has been a high priority since he camped in Tuscaloosa in June. Tide coaches rate Brown higher than several of the top names ranked by the recruiting services. He will visit Tuscaloosa for the Tennessee game and Texas A&M the following weekend. The Aggies are pushing hard to keep Brown in-state. He will announce his decision on November 2nd.
UPDATE: Brown announced early (10/27) and picked Texas A&M
- Caleb Tremblay – DT; 4-Star; No. 5 DT and No. 8 Overall (JUCO). Tremblay is another high priority for the Tide staff. Tide coaches have been on Tremblay hard since his summer workout in Tuscaloosa. Cal, Oregon and Washington trying to keep him on the west coast. Most recruiting insiders see Tremblay as a near-lock for Alabama football. He plans to visit Tuscaloosa again in mid-December but intends to make his decision before that visit.
- Christian Barmore – DT; 3-Star from Philadelphia; 247Sports (not the Composite) has Barmore as the No. 22 DT and the No. 274 Overall. This guy was so under the radar that not all the services have rated him yet. Oregon offered him in July. He committed to Temple in June and de-committed in October. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Pitt, Mississippi State and LSU all made October offers. Since then he has visited Maryland. After the Tide offer, Barmore said, “this changes everything.”
- Teair Tart-Spencer – DT; Tart-Spencer is the No. 1 DT and No. 1 Overall JUCO player. Alabama offered Tart-Spencer in January and it looks as though it could come down to the Tide and Ohio State.
Alabama football has other options to reach a goal of four interior defensive linemen in the 2018 class. Two 4-Stars from St. Louis, Michael Thompson and Trevor Trout are possibilities. Greg Emerson (Tennessee) and Emmit Gooden (Arkansas) are flip candidates. 3-Star Jalen Cunningham would quickly accept an offer, but few insiders see the Tide having room.
