Alabama Football: Two Tagovailoa QBs could be better than one

No, Tua Tagovailoa didn’t just win the Class 7A, Region 3 football championship; his brother Taulia did. Could Alabama football have both on the roster?

ICYMI: Big-Time CFB Head Coach Contracts, Saban Leads The Pack

Drew Champlin of AL.com reported how Thompson quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was the hero of the high school regional championship, making his “12-yard touchdown pass to Mo Edwards with 4:53 left and the two-point conversion to Michael Pettway gave the No. 3-ranked Warriors a 32-25 lead, one that held for a final score” for Thompson over a very tough Hoover HS football team.

“Thompson, which trailed by 11 early before later losing an 11-point lead, converted four third downs on the drive,” under Tagovailoa’s leadership as quarterback. For the game, Taulia completed 16 of 31 passes for 231 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Overall, “Thompson outgained Hoover 374-328” in total yards; however, it must be noted that Hoover had 11 penalties for 90 yards while Thompson had seven penalties for 60 yards.

For the season, Tagovailoa has played in eight games, with a .731 completion average, 14.5 yards per completion, and an average of 290.3 yards earned per game. Taulia has scored 24 touchdowns through the air, averaging three per game, while only throwing three interceptions in total. His feet are pretty dangerous, as well. On 12 carries, Taulia has 69 yards and two touchdowns.

The kid’s a stud, just like his older brother Tua. Listed at 5’11, the 207-pound frame of seemingly pure muscle is only a junior; yet, Taulia is ranked 49th in the country for a QB, first overall in Alabama.

Crimson Tide fans must be drooling in anticipation for Taulia to graduate high school. The bond is already there between the Tagovailoa family and Alabama, with ‘Tua Time’ running wild when he comes into the game for starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Josh Beam of AL.com had reported earlier in the month that Taulia “already has offers from Alabama and Oregon,” being a four-star QB after playing two seasons at Kapolei High School in Hawaii. His family made the move to Alabama for his older brother, and the transition benefits the Crimson Tide a great deal. Taulia said that on the field, “I’ve seen a lot of different things from defenses [than in Hawaii], but I feel like Coach (Mark) Freeman has helped me a lot .. and has done a good job of helping me and all of us.”

The most important words that Alabama football needs to hear is when Taulia said that “here, it’s like everyone looks forward to the Alabama games. Football’s not as big over there. … Just football overall here, it’s a fun atmosphere to play in, for sure.”

So, a stud of an athlete, the younger brother of a proven success at Alabama with the same genetic makeup, thinks that the state of Alabama is an excellent place to live and enjoy football? Talk about making Crimson Tide football head coach Nick Saban’s job easier to recruit Taulia. The high school atmosphere did it for him.

Taulia has already been thinking of the Alabama offer since February:

Now, his success and enjoyment of the Alabama atmosphere can only be putting more fuel on the fire of rumor that Taulia would be leaning towards Tuscaloosa. Especially when his family’s Twitter account puts out pictures of themselves in full support of Tua and the Crimson Tide:

Just imagine it, Tide fans. What if Hurts played quarterback as a senior, with both Tua and Taulia behind him? Even if Hurts, who has been playing well enough for Heisman Trophy considerations, jumps early for the NFL draft, Alabama football would have two incredible arms on the same team. And, since they are loyal brothers, the pair would only want to help promote and make each other better, instead of creating some quarterback controversy that could hamper their development.

Saban always works hard to recruit the best players for Alabama; however, in this case, much of the work has already been done for him. A very good thing, considering how talented Taulia is. He could be tempted back to Hawaii or another school near the west coast, or pretty much any top school in the country. Yet, with a chance to play for an elite program, in a football-frenzied state, with his brother may just be too good to pass up. The Crimson Tide fans already scream ‘Tua Time’ when Tua takes the field, so the Tagovailoa family is already feeling the love. It may be a lovefest if Taulia also commits to Tuscaloosa.
