With a heavy police escort, this was Nick Saban’s return to Baton Rouge.  He returned with the undefeated, number one ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Tigers, ranked sixteenth, were eager to upset the Tide and their former head coach.  It seemed like things would be going that way early in the game.

In the first quarter, Alabama football moved the ball effectively on their first drive. Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson rushed for a 1-yard score for Alabama’s only score of the quarter.

LSU was much better at moving the ball in the first quarter.  Jarrett Lee had a 30-yard touchdown pass and Charles Scott had a 30-yard rushing touchdown.

In the second quarter, Tide safety Rashad Johnson returned an interception for a 54-yard touchdown.  That was the only score of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, it was Alabama again being the aggressor and accounting for the only score.  Running back Glen Coffee had a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:14 remaining in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, with 6:12 remaining, LSU finally snapped their scoring woes when Charles Scott rushed for a 1-yard touchdown.  This would be the final score in regulation as both teams got ready for overtime.

In overtime, LSU got the ball first, only to give it away, when Jarrett Lee threw his fourth interception. It was also the third pick of the game by Rashad Johnson, tying the school record.

When Alabama football took the field, Wilson hit Julio Jones along the sideline to the one for a 24-yard gain. Two plays later, Wilson ran it into the end zone to win it.  Final Score:  Alabama 27 LSU 21
