Normally, this is a weekly article series examining the development of one Alabama Football player. The last player chosen was freshman wide receiver Henry Ruggs III.  However, in preparation for LSU, we will be examining a unit to watch that is key for the Tide, the Defensive Line.

When the University of Alabama football team prepares for LSU they know what to expect.  They expect a tough and physical football game, which is also why the Tide often have their bye week prior to facing the Tigers.

When facing a team like LSU, it’s imperative that your defensive line is above average in order to compete.  Alabama knows this, which is why they have had the Tiger’s number for the past six meetings.

For example, take a look at the last two meetings between the Tide and Tigers.  LSU had a dominant running game each season prior to meeting the Tide.  However, when they hit the field that running game was basically non-existent.

In 2015 and 2016, LSU and running back Leonard Fournette was running through opposing defenses with ease.  However, when facing the Tide, they managed 54 and 33 rushing yards.  That’s only 2.1 and 1.2 yards per attempt.

The defensive line at Alabama takes pride in shutting down opponents’ ground game.  It has become an even sweeter feeling when the opponent happens to be LSU.

There has been much speculation about LSU possibly switching up their scheme.  Doubtful, but maybe they should try something new.

However, Tide players aren’t buying the “new scheme” hype and are still expecting LSU to be the same old LSU. So expect Alabama to be the same old dominant Alabama. Just ask defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne:

"“LSU is just a team that likes to establish the run, and we’re a team that (likes to) establish stopping the run,”"

If LSU plans on running a lot against such a dominant defense, they might be in for another long night.  Alabama yet again boasts the number one rushing defense in the nation, allowing only 66.38 yards per game.

But hey, 66-yards might be considered a win for LSU since they haven’t even passed the 60-yard mark in two years.  Look for Isaiah Buggs, Da’Ron Payne, Raekwon Davis, and Da’Shawn Hand, should he play, to set the tone early.
