Alabama softball builds confidence with two wins over BC and Fordham
By Chris Dodson
Alabama Softball started the Easton Crimson Classic with two wins Friday over Boston College and Fordham. The two wins contribute to building Alabama’s confidence after losses earlier this season.
Alabama softball first took down Boston College 5-0. Alexis Osorio (4-3) improved her record and boosted her confidence by throwing her seventh career no-hitter. She also pitched 11 strikeouts in the game as well. For BC, Allyson Frei (1-7) earned the loss in the game.
In game two, Alabama managed to keep Fordham at bay with a 4-3 win. Courtney Gettins (6-1) got the win with just over four innings pitched, with Madison Preston earning the save. Alabama had two errors in the game and it wouldn’t have been a good loss if it had gone the other way, as Fordham is 5-14 in 2018. Lauren Quense (0-7) earned a loss on her record.
Confidence is Key
Osorio’s seventh no-hitter wasn’t the only notable thing Friday night. Head Coach Patrick Murphy earned his 1,000th career win. His entire head coaching career has been at Alabama, making him the first coach to earn 1,000 wins entirely at one SEC program. Murphy has been with the program for 22 years.
These things should help Alabama. If they come out with five wins this weekend, that would be huge heading into SEC play next week. Alabama has a huge series away from home against Auburn. If Alabama wants to have a successful season and a shot at the WCWS, the SEC season is in the way.
For Alabama, confidence is all they need. The confidence may have been damaged by losses to some big name teams, but the 4-0 loss to Northwestern last weekend stung the worst.
However, we’ve seen Alabama at their best. They are scary to play with when they have confidence. They have mountains of talent on both sides of the ball. They just need the confidence to unlock it.
We’re not saying that Alabama softball doesn’t have any confidence. Patrick Murphy wouldn’t let that happen. Alabama just feeds and works better when playing with confidence. Alabama loves to take advantage when they see the weakness in the opponent. Alabama softball can take on any opponent with the right attitude.
