Though inexperienced, the Tide 2018 secondary has talent. The first six appear close to being ready to perform capably. Depth is a major concern. Other than Jared Mayden and Daniel Wright, the second-unit may need help from summer arriving freshmen.

Safety

Safety Starters: Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney

Backup: Daniel Wright

Others: Kyriq McDonald and Keaton Anderson

The Tide should be in good shape with either Wright, Mckinney at the second safety slot. True freshman Josh Jobe could make it into the two-deep sometime this fall.

Cornerback

Cornerback Starters: Saivion Smith and Trevon Diggs

Backups: Jared Mayden and Patrick Surtain Jr.

Others: Nigel Knott, Eddie Smith, Josh Jobe and Jalyn Armour-Davis

Diggs and Saivion Smith are the probable starters. Neither player has reached lock status as Nick Saban is looking for continued improvement. Patrick Surtain Jr. is expected to play in 2018 and could become a starter at some point in the regular season. The Alabama football staff is very high on Surtain Jr., Josh Jobe and Eddie Smith. Armour-Davis will probably redshirt.

Star and Money

Star Starter: Shyheim Carter

Saban has commented favorably on Carter’s leadership role in the young secondary.

Backup: Surtain Jr. could be the player closest in versatility to Minkah Fitzpatrick and might be used at Star.

Money Starter: Daniel Wright

Backup: Jared Mayden

Others: Surtain Jr., Keaton Anderson and Josh Jobe.

Inexperience may lead to some breakdowns in the first half of the season. A big plus for a maturing secondary will be the Crimson Tide pass rush.

The Ole Miss receivers and the ‘Air Raid’ offense will be a challenge for the young secondary. By midseason, the secondary should be good, perhaps very good.

Kickers

Skyler DeLong is no J.K. Scott, but he should be more than adequate. Between Joseph Bulovas and graduate transfer Austin Jones, the place-kicking could be better than 2017.

Kick Returners

There are at least a dozen players who could handle these jobs. There is no shortage of skill.

This projected depth chart will be updated again after the first fall camp scrimmage. We wish that was not so far away.
