Alabama Football: Some interesting facts from the latest 2018 roster

The latest Alabama football roster has been released through the SEC Media Guide. Check out how the new players size up, weight wise and also some roster changes.

The latest Alabama football roster provides new information on the height and weight of all players. The 2018 roster is still a work-in-progress and is not likely to be complete for another few weeks.

As current as the latest roster is, It still lists two players no longer on the team. The dismissed VanDarius Cowan is still shown on the roster. Also, Jordan Davis is listed despite him having to move to Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi.

There has been no official word from the Alabama football program on inside linebacker, Keith Holcombe. Holcombe skipped spring football to concentrate on baseball. All indications have been he will not return to football this season. He is not listed on the latest roster.

What matters most in the roster details is size. As in how much do certain players weigh. The list below shows the information on 2018 signing class, as well as a few redshirt freshmen. There have also been some weight changes for other returning players.

The biggest weight gain for returning players is LaBryan Ray, formerly listed at 272 pounds is up to 294 pounds. At 6-foot-5, Ray has the frame to handle the added weight. A few insiders have said Jared Mayden had beefed up to the 205-208 pounds range. The roster shows him at 197 pounds. Jamey Mosely had been rumored to be at 248 pounds, but the roster lists him at 239 pounds. Deonte Brown, rumored in the 355-375 pound range during his two-plus years in Tuscaloosa, is listed at 344 pounds. Mac Jones is shown as having added a much-need six pounds, getting him to 205 pounds.

Freshmen and Redshirts

The best news among the true freshmen is Eyabi Anoma. The 5-Star linebacker weighed 235 pounds coming out of high school. Recent insider comments have said he was up to 250 pounds. The roster lists him at 245 pounds. At 6-foot-5, he will eventually play at around 265 pounds. The extra ten pounds he now carries increases his chance of meaningful play this fall.

Long-time Alabama football fans will find something else interesting in the 2018 Alabama football roster. The team has a Barker, a Baumhower and a Musso. The first two are Crimson Tide legacy sons. The third is a cousin to Tide great, Johnny Musso.
