Alabama Football: Tide players named to national awards watch lists

Alabama football has 11 players named to 13 national player awards, watch lists. Check which Crimson Tide player was named to each watch list.

In the Alabama football Saban era, fans have grown accustomed to players winning national awards. The Heisman Award gets the most attention but the other awards are noteworthy as well. In addition to the Heisman’s won by Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry, other Crimson Tide players have dominated awards achievements.

Derrick Henry added the Maxwell, Doak Walker and  Walter Camp awards in 2015.  In 2016, Jonathan Allen won the Nagurski, Bednarik, Hendricks and Lombardi awards. In 2011 Barrett Jones won the Outland Trophy and the Wuerffel award. Jones also won the Rimington award in 2012.

Players on the 2018 roster on watch lists for three awards are Raekwon Davis and Damien Harris. Nine other current Crimson Tide players have been named to watch lists. The full list of Tide players is below, as well as past Crimson Tide winners.

Walter Camp – Player of the Year Award

Maxwell – Player of the Year Award

  • Damien Harris, Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa

Doak Walker Award – Top Running back

  • Damien Harris
  • Won by Trent Richardson in 2011 and Derrick Henry in 2015

Davey O’Brien Award – Best Quarterback

  • Jalen Hurts

Bednarik Award – Most Outstanding Defensive Player

  • Raekwon Davis, Anfernee Jennings and Mack Wilson
  • Won by Jonathan Allen in 2016 and Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2017

Nagurski Award – Best Defensive Player

  • Raekwon Davis
  • Won by Jonathan Allen in 2016

Lott Impact Award – Best Defensive Player, measuring character and performance

  • Anfernee Jennings
  • Won by DeMeco Ryans in 2005

Butkus Award – Best Linebacker

  • Anfernee Jennings, Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses
  • Won by Reuben Foster in 2016; C.J. Mosley in 2013; Rolando McClain in 2009 and Derrick Thomas in 1988

Mackey Award – Best Tight End

  • Hale Hentges

Rimington Award – Top Center

  • Ross Piersbacher
  • Won by Ryan Kelly in 2015 and Barrett Jones in 2012

Outland Trophy – Best Interior Lineman

  • Ross Piersbacher and Jonah Williams
  • Won by Cam Robinson in 2016; Barrett Jones in 2011; Andre Smith in 2008 and Chris Samuels in 1999

Hornung Award – Most Versatile Player

  • Trevon Diggs

Wuerffel Award – Exemplary community service and academic achievement

  • Hale Hentges
  • Won by Barrett Jones in 2011

The Thorpe, Lombardi and Unitas watch lists will be named later. Minkah Fitzpatrick won the Thorpe in 2017. Jonathan Allen in 2016 and Cornelius Bennett in 1986 won the Lombardi award. A.J. McCarron won the Unitas award in 2013. Jay Barker won the Unitas is 1994.

No Alabama football players were named to watch lists for the Biletnikoff (receiver), Groza (placekicker) and Guy (punter) awards.

Most of the award winners will be named in early December. The awards ceremony will be held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
