Alabama football worked through its first day of summer heat in full pads on Wednesday. Afterward, Nick Saban spoke and answered Jalen questions.

Alabama football marches on, now five of twenty fall camp sessions completed. There was no break from the mid-90s heat or the relentless grind for the players to improve. The ever fluid, two-deep organization chart defines work and goals. It provides no guarantees of playing time.

There will be some indication of which players are rising and falling after Saturday’s scrimmage. Then again the following Saturday in the second and final scrimmage of fall camp.

Alabama football fans are most interested in what Saban said after the practice session. Asked about Jalen Hurts’ comments at Fan Day, Saban was succinct.

"Every player has a right to express what he feels and what he thinks. The rhetoric will not have anything to do with who’s the quarterback. That will obviously be decided on the field by how people execute. How they do their job."

Yesterday’s camp report discussed business as usual. Saban’s comments are a perfect example. The Alabama Crimson Tide had a QB competition before Jalen’s comments. It still has one four days later. It will continue to have one until Nick Saban says it doesn’t.

Practice Report and Saban updates

  • Based upon Saban’s comments Wednesday, it appears Shyheim Carter is working at Star, Money and at cornerback to enhance his flexibility. It is clear when there are five or six DBs in a game, Carter will be one of them. Still to be determined is will he be one of four DBs in the little-used base defense.
  • Defensive lineman, Stephon Wynn sustained a ligament strain on Tuesday and will miss some work, but not need surgery.
  • Despite media reports Josh Jacobs has not been doing drills at full speed, Saban said Jacobs is fully recovered and has looked good in practice.
  • Chris Allen worked with the inside linebackers for a third session.
  • Based on the organizational chart, Alex Leatherwood is so far holding off Matt Womack at right tackle.
  • About 25 percent of NFL teams were represented by scouts viewing the practice.
  • Asked about new recruit, Brandon Kaho, Saban said he could not comment. Saban’s restraint indicates Kaho’s national-letter-of-intent had, as of Wednesday afternoon, not been received. Insiders state efforts are being made to get Kaho to Tuscaloosa as soon as possible.

Alabama football will return to the practice field Thursday night. The Saturday scrimmage will not be open to visitors.
