Alabama Football: Good news from fall camp session No. 17
By Ronald Evans
The Alabama football team worked outside in full pads again on Wednesday. Najee Harris appeared to be close to returning to practice action.
For those Alabama football fans wondering exactly how many shotgun snaps Jalen and Tua took from Ross Piersbacher, our report may be lacking. There was no new practice information (same as Monday and Tuesday) to indicate which QB will start against Louisville.
Did the Nick Saban interview with Chris Lowe and a similar theme by Cecil Hurts offer clues? Clues yes, answers would be a no. Cecil was spot on in saying the first three opponents are high octane offenses (yes, that includes the Red Wolves) and the Tide may need an above average number of points until the defense matures.
We recommend reading all of Cecil’s story but for those who don’t – he did not predict either of those teams had a real chance to score enough points to win.
In conversation with Lowe, Saban repeated the same old tune about why not play two quarterbacks if they both can help the team win. The most enlightening comment made by Saban to Lowe was the 2018 Tide might be a,
"different kind of team … That plays a factor, too, because we may have to score more points to win this season than we have in the past."
Whoever starts against Louisville, and no matter how much each quarterback plays, Nick Saban wants the 2018 offense to be more explosive than past seasons. He wants an offense that can win all the shootouts that become necessary.
Practice Notes
- Najee Harris was in a black jersey and not doing drills during the media viewing periods. The big, good news was Harris was no longer in a boot. It looks like he could be available for Louisville.
- No change on the line which leads to the conclusion the starting right tackle will be Jedrick Wills.
- Shyheim Carter was at star in the dime defense, with Xavier McKinney at money and Jared Mayden at the other safety position, opposite Deionte Thompson. It is too soon to know if Mayden will earn the sixth starting spot in the dime defense but he appears to lead. The other five starters are set barring injury, with Diggs and Smith at the corners.
- For those worried Josh Jacobs has not fully recovered, he has, from insider reports, been impressive in practices.
Alabama football will return to the practice field Thursday afternoon. Nick Saban will do a media review session after the practice.
