Alabama Football: Camp officially ends with Dwight back as Diggs watches
By Ronald Evans
Alabama football officially wrapped up fall camp working inside Saturday afternoon. Johnny Dwight practiced but Trevon Diggs appeared slowed by injury.
The last official fall camp session for Alabama football took place Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide worked inside the Hank Crisp facility in shorts and shells rather than full pads.
There was good news for Alabama football fans. Defensive linemen, Johnny Dwight participated in practice with no signs of any physical limitations. The redshirt senior had not been seen in the media viewing periods on Thursday or Friday. His absence created a stir among Tide fans who know too well the limited depth on the defensive line. Based on previous positive reports, Dwight’s fall camp performance tabbed him as having an important rotational role this season.
Against that good news, there was new concern cornerback Trevon Diggs is hampered by an undisclosed injury. The rumor on Diggs is a mild ankle injury. On Saturday, he was seen observing during drills, standing to the side and not in cleats.
In Diggs’ normal cornerback slot, with the first unit in dime drills, was true freshman, Patrick Surtain Jr. Assuming Diggs only has a minor problem, Surtain is not likely to earn a starting role against Louisville. The sixth starting role in the dime secondary is still up for grabs, with Saturday’s practice showing junior Jared Mayden in the lead.
The previously sidelined Najee Harris continued to look well enough to play in the season opener. Backup left tackle, Scott Lashley continues to be limited in practice activity. With Chris Owens filling in at second-unit, left tackle, true freshman Emil Ekiyor has worked as the second unit center. Most of the fall, Owens has been expected to gain the backup center role.
The Crimson Tide will rest and hopefully heal a bit on Sunday with no practice. Alabama football coach, Nick Saban said earlier the team had already started preliminary work for the Louisville game.
Game week will start with a Nick Saban media session at noon on Monday. The team will have its first official Louisville practice on Monday afternoon at 4:00 PM CST.
For most Alabama football fans, the highlight of the first Monday practice of each season is the official Alabama football depth chart. There are a few positions (well one in particular) that a ‘slash’ or an ‘or’ can be expected. As in Jalen Hurts or Tua Tagovialoa.
