Alabama Football: The latest on Tide assistant Pete Golding

Alabama football co-Defensive Coordinator, Pete Golding is being chased hard by Ole Miss and Oklahoma. Check out the latest buzz.

Alabama football assistant coach, Pete Golding has quickly become a hot coaching commodity. After less than a year in Tuscaloosa, it is being widely reported both Ole Miss and Oklahoma want to hire Golding as a defensive coordinator.

What follows in this post is a summary of everything Bama Hammer has collected as of late Friday night. It is a fluid situation with no official word from the involved schools, including the University of Alabama. There are few facts, plenty of conjecture and even more rumor. We will try to categorize each.

The facts as we know them

  • Pete Golding makes $650K per season (excluding bonuses) as the co-Defensive Coordinator for Alabama football
  • On Friday, Golding was in Louisiana recruiting Ishmael Sopsher for the Crimson Tide
  • On Friday night, Golding was in Tuscaloosa meeting with Crimson Tide recruits and commits
  • On Sunday, he is scheduled to join Nick Saban for an in-home visit with 5-Star, Nakobe Dean
  • Golding is a rising star in the coaching ranks, respected for both his coaching abilities and his recruiting talent

What may or may not be true

  • Ole Miss insiders have been saying for about 72 hours the school has a deal in principle with Golding to join Matt Luke’s staff.
  • The rumored compensation is $1.5M per year, guaranteed for three years.
  • Oklahoma sources believe the Sooners can still lure Golding to Norman, though a deal is not likely to be made until after the NCAA December Signing Period – and possibly not until after the Playoffs.
  • Ole Miss has a second, identified candidate, Mike MacIntyre, former head coach at Colorado.
  • Some Ole Miss insiders are confident both MacIntyre and Golding will join Matt Luke’s staff.
  • Pete Golding turned down Ole Miss at least once in this process.

What is the response in Tuscaloosa?

  • Within reason, Alabama football is in a position to not be outbid for Golding. Though a big raise, say north of $1M would also require a bump for Tosh Lupoi. Again, not a problem.
  • Nick Saban does not want to lose Golding. But, if he decides there is a strong chance it will happen, Golding’s Crimson Tide recruiting efforts will be curtailed, if not ended. If the situation remains unresolved by Sunday, watch who joins Saban at the in-home visit with Nakobe Dean.
  • Alabama football insiders have expressed confidence Golding is not leaving the Crimson Tide.

What will happen?

  • It is possible that as of early Saturday morning, no one, including Pete Golding and Nick Saban will not know the final result for days or weeks. Golding is young, only 34, and his career will continue to be enhanced by remaining in Tuscaloosa. Moving to Oxford would be a risk by tying his future to a struggling program and Matt Luke.
  • If Oklahoma is really prepared to wait, the Sooners would seem to be a bigger threat than Ole Miss.

If forced to make a prediction, ours would be Golding sticks with the Tide. Tosh gets bumped to $1.5M and Golding gets bumped to $1M. If it were to take considerably more to retain Golding, Saban might choose to pass. Then the issue would become any potential impact on the 2019 signing class.
