As Alabama softball moves out of the main non-conference schedule and into the SEC, they are the only D1 team to be undefeated at a school-record 31-0. Despite a stacked SEC schedule, this team stands to come out well in the conference.

Alabama Softball is leaving Hawaii with six more wins than when it left Tuscaloosa. After breaking the record for best start in program feed, the Tide now moves on to its second SEC series with a road trip against Texas A&M followed by a home stand against Mississippi State. That’s virtually a warm-up into the meat of the SEC schedule, where four currently ranked SEC opponents will face Bama back-to-back.

Already, however, this team is starting to mold itself into a WCWS contender. That’s why all the other SEC opponents need to watch out.

Why is Alabama Softball so good this year?

Whenever similar starts have occurred in Alabama softball history, it’s a question that is usually easy to answer. You could have said pitching has been really good, like in the era of Jackie Traina. You could have also said the offense has been hot, with stars like Peyton Grantham and Marisa Runyon.

This team, however, is special in how un-special it is.

Alabama has beaten opponents in almost every way possible. They’ve won by pitching shutouts or pitcher’s duel. They have won with multiple home-runs or with few runs coming across home plate. They have won in five innings and in seven. The biggest moment so far for the program was Game 2 against Missouri. When Alabama got down early 8-2 in the 3rd inning, hope was fading the Tide could get the bats rolling to come back. Alabama ended up winning 14-8, making it the biggest comeback in program history.

Alabama softball just doesn’t want to lose and it will do what has to win.

So, if you had to answer the question of why Alabama is good, you could probably answer with, it’s versatility and tenacity. It’s going to be difficult to game plan around this Alabama team because so far the Tide shows few weaknesses. Additionally, this team is really coachable, which is something head coach Patrick Murphy has always done well. So, even if you find ways to stop Alabama’s usual paths to victory, the Tide will create other paths. That’s what makes a good WCWS contender.
