Four former Alabama football players get new NFL deals in the ‘second wave’ of free agency. Several others are still waiting and hoping.

The 2019 NFL free agency season began with a bang for five former Alabama football players. The quintet (listed below) racked up $238M in new contract deals.

after the first few days of free agency frenzy, the next phase is sometimes referred to as the ‘second wave’ and it is really phase two of a three phase NFL realignment process. Phase one is brief and covers the new big dollars deals going to the most coveted players. Phase two is the period between the start of free agency and the NFL Draft. Teams juggle adding new roster pieces through more free agent deals with waiting to see what can be added in the Draft.

Trades become a major component of the roster shuffling pre and post-Draft. After the post-Draft settling, a large group of free agents remains unsigned. In phase three, it may be weeks or even months before many of them find new deals. Some of them will not be signed, effectively ending their NFL careers.
