Day one and the first round was good to former Alabama football players. Three former Crimson Tiders were selected in the first round Thursday night in Nashville.

Third Round

Damien Harris was selected by the New England Patriots as the No. 87 pick in the third round.

Second Round

Irv Smith Jr. was selected by the Minnesota Vikings as the No. 50 pick in the second round.

It is tempting to say Irv Smith Jr. was destined to become an NFL football player. He certainly inherited a genetic profile for football. Twenty-six NFL Drafts ago, Irv Smith Sr. was a first-round draft selection by the New Orleans Saints. Junior and Senior share the same tight end position. They are visibly, physically similar, Some call the son almost a carbon copy of the father. The one big difference is the father played at Notre Dame while the son played Alabama football.

Irv Smith Jr. was a record-setting tight end for the Crimson Tide. Last season Irv caught 44 passes for 710 yards and seven touchdowns. The TD catches set a new single-season Crimson Tide record for a tight end.

First Round Selections

Quinnen Williams was the first, going at pick No.3 to the New York Jets. Jonah Williams followed as the No. 11 pick going to the Cincinnati Bengals. The third Crimson Tide first-round selection went to Josh Jacobs as the No. 24 pick to the Oakland Raiders.

An interesting note on Josh Jacobs is purportedly the choice by Oakland was no surprise to Jacobs. Oakland Raiders head coach, Jon Gruden apparently told Jacobs at the NFL Combine that Oakland would select him in the first round.

Another special note for Crimson Tide fans – Nick Saban is now the King of the NFL first-round. With the three first-round picks, Nick Saban now has a college football record with 34 first-round picks during his 23 seasons of college coaching. The previous record belonged to Joe Paterno with 33 first-round selections in 43 seasons of coaching.

Keep checking back with this post. We will update it through the third round selections.
