What is next?
Saivion Smith was the eleventh former Alabama football player who some had projected would be drafted. Watching the seventh round unfold was no doubt frustrating for Saivion as six other cornerbacks were selected.
Smith will now connect with a team as an undrafted free agent (UFA). The UFA guys actually have an advantage over those selected in the seventh round and possibly even the sixth rounders. The UFAs, who are able to sign with a team, will be going to teams with a defined need at their position.
Last year, Robert Foster, Levi Wallace and Cam Sims made NFL rosters as undrafted free agents. Also last year, two Crimson Tide seventh-round picks, Bo Scarbrough and Josh Frazier failed to make a 53-man NFL roster.
Most of the former Alabama football players chosen matched expectations. Christian Miller, Deionte Thompson and Mack Wilson were drafted lower than expected. Some post-Draft rumors were health concerns about Miller and Thompson. Some teams, who did not consider Mack, were rumored to be concerned about his attitude.
Hopefully, all of them and the rest of the Crimson Tide 2019, NFL Draft class will prove themselves to their teams.
Thinking back on the three days of the Draft, we wonder how it might have been different if Ozzie Newsome was still the Ravens GM. Ozzie knew Crimson Tide prospects better than any GM and he was sometimes more likely to take a chance on a former Alabama football player.
