Alabama Football: Crimson Tide recruiting to see big uptick in June
By Ronald Evans
Alabama football has maybe 10 open slots left for the 2020 class. Every June is big for the Crimson Tide recruiting calendar.
The Alabama football 2020 recruiting class has 17 verbal commits. The latest player to commit to the Crimson Tide was 4-Star, wide receiver, Thaiu Jones-Bell. The talented wideout becomes the latest of south Florida connections going back to Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley and Jerry Jeudy.
It is unfair to compare Jones-Bell with three of the best Alabama football receivers ever, but he is a prized recruit for the 2020 class. At 5-feet-11 and 187 pounds, he has a build making him tough to tackle. He also possesses the skills required to produce early for the Crimson Tide.
Jones-Bell is the fourth highest rated verbal commit in the Tide’s 2020 class, based on the 247Sports Composite. The addition of Jones-Bell pushes the Alabama Crimson Tide up to the No. 2, 2020 class. The top five currently are Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Miami and Georgia.
Even with so few 2020 slots available, much could change on the Alabama football Big Board over the next few weeks. The reason is June is camp time in Tuscaloosa. Eight days of the month will be filled up with camp activities, beginning with a kicking camp on June 1. Six days are devoted to high school camps. Two more days will be devoted to just linemen, on both sides of the ball.
The June camps always result in new offers. The biggest event for June will be the Champions Cookout on June 21. New commitments almost always occur during a big Cookout weekend. A second Cookout will also take place in July after the dead period ends. This summer’s dead period is June 24-July 24.
Who is next for Alabama football?
Camp performance is a major determinant in whether a commitment will be accepted by the Alabama football staff. Since camp performance cannot be predicted, the next commits are also difficult to predict.
Three names to watch in June are inside linebacker, Quandarrius Robinson (former Auburn commit), offensive lineman, Chris Morris and cornerback prospect, Ethan Pouncey. The Alabama football staff also expects USC QB commit, Bryce Young to visit Tuscaloosa this summer. Alabama football legacy, Reggie Grimes has stated he is in no hurry, but he could jump on board at anytime.
There is some interesting data on Alabama football signees going back to the 2000 class. Based on the 247Sports Composite, of the top 125 Crimson Tide commits going back to 2000, 33 of them are on the 2019 Alabama football roster.
Will the Crimson Tide lose any of its current 17 verbal commits? There will be changes and some of them will occur because of commits sliding down the Tide’s Big Board.
