Check out a deep dive into former Alabama football players’ NFL contract extensions, new free-agent deals and the former Tide players still looking for a team.

Several Alabama football players have recently gained new NFL contracts. A few are still looking for a new deal or a new team.

In the myriad of options available to NFL teams, some form of free agency will continue into July. Players can join an NFL team after July, often as a practice squad player.

Through Mar. 22, NFL  business, 58 former Alabama football players had a 2020 contract. The 58 number includes Maurice Smith and Alvin Kamara who were first Alabama football players before transferring to other schools. A complete list of the 58 players and salary deals for 2020 is provided below. In compiling the list, spotrac.com and overthecap.com were used.

The list includes only the salary and guaranteed bonuses for 2020. Incentive bonuses are not included. Those bonuses can significantly increase a year’s compensation. Mack Wilson earned $416K in performance bonus last season.

The other consideration in evaluating a player’s contract is guaranteed money. For most players, a signed contract does not gain much income unless the player makes the final roster. Some of the deals include guaranteed money protecting players if they are cut because of less skill, cap moves or injury. Any contract can have none or any of those ‘guarantees.’

Former Alabama football wide receiver, Gehrig Dieter has earned $669K in three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. His 2020 contract is valued at $585K, however, so much of it is tied to incentives, Over the Cap lists his 2020 cash at just $90K. Another example is the new contract for HaHa Clinton-Dix. His new one-year, $4M deal with the Cowboys includes guaranteed money of $2.5M.
