Alabama Football: Top Ten National Championship Club

No. 9 (tie) – Texas Longhorns

The 1960s were a great decade for the Longhorns. Alabama football, Southern Cal, Notre Dame and Texas were the decade’s dominant teams.

Four Texas Longhorns National Championships

  • 1963 – Darrell Royal coached an undefeated 11-0 Longhorn team, finishing the season with a win over Navy in the Cotton Bowl. Some Alabama football fans may think beating Navy was no big achievement. The Midshipmen were strong in the early 1960s. Running back Joe Bellino won the Heisman in 1960 and Roger Staubach won it in 1963. Navy won nine games in 1963.
  • 1969 – Darrell Royal again led the Horns. His team was 11-0, closing the season with a win over Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
  • 1970 – Another Royal Championship from a 10-1 record. The Longhorns finished the season losing to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. Royal, being a good friend of Alabama football coach, Bear Bryant, taught Bryant and the Tide staff the wishbone offense in the offseason.
  • 2005 – Mack Brown led Texas to a BCS Championship, posting a 13-0 record. The runner-up was USC.
