Alabama Football: Top Ten National Championship Club

No. 4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Eight Ohio State National Championships

Michigan fans will deny it but historically, the Buckeyes have been the class of the Big Ten. Although under other names, the conference goes all the way back to 1896. Michigan does have more conference titles but in our 1919-2019 review, the Buckeyes have the most National Championships.

  • 1942 – Later NFL coaching legend, Paul Brown led the Buckeyes for three seasons in 1941-1943. His 1942 team was 9-1, beating Iowa Pre-Flight in the last game.
  • 1954 – The first of Woody Hayes’ five National Championships came from a 10-0 season with a win over Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.
  • 1957 – Hayes and the Buckeyes were 9-1 in 1957, beating Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
  • 1961 – The Buckeyes went 9-1, blowing out Michigan in the last game of the season. Alabama football fans remember ’61 was a shared Championship with the Crimson Tide.
  • 1968 – The1968 team was undefeated, going 10-0 and toppling Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.
  • 1970 – Hayes won his fifth title in ’70 as the Buckeyes were 9-1, losing in the Rose Bowl to Stanford.
  • 2002 – Jim Tressel joined Ohio State history with the 2002 Championship. His team was 14-0 and beat No. 1 ranked Miami in the Championship game.
  • 2014 – Urban Meyer added to his two Florida Championships with one for Ohio State. The Buckeyes were 14-1, beating FSU in the first College Football Playoff Championship
