Alabama football landed a great 2021 prospect in Devonta Smith.

Recruiting has been heating up for Alabama football, and they just landed another big name. After recently de-committing from Ohio State, 4-star cornerback Devonta Smith has announced that he will be playing for the Crimson Tide.

Smith committed to the Buckeyes in mid-March, so it was a bit surprising when he changed paths in only a few months. One must believe that Nick Saban fought hard on the recruiting trail to land Smith due to his versatility as a defensive back.

Smith won’t turn the scales in terms of recruiting rankings, but he is still an incredibly valuable addition to the Crimson Tide recruiting class. Coach Saban decides who to recruit without looking at any site, so he could not care less if he’s a fringe 3-star to 4-star player. He believes that Smith will contribute, and that’s all that matters.

What’s next for Alabama football?

This hopefully will not be the only recruit that the Tide can swing from another school. They are looking to add a quarterback and a defensive tackle who are currently committed to other universities. Outside of this, Alabama football is also looking to add multiple offensive linemen and skill players to the 2021 recruiting class.

We will have to wait and see where this class ends up landing in overall rankings, but the Crimson Tide have gained a lot of ground over the past three months. With plenty of prospects waiting in the wings, this class could potentially be one of the best that Nick Saban has ever seen. The names are not necessarily flashy, but it adds key depth at vital positions for Alabama. At the end of the day, that’s all you can ask for.

Devonta Smith will fit right in with the Crimson Tide. At the very least, he will add depth across the defensive backfield before starting as an upperclassman. If everything clicks early, he might see himself fill in after Patrick Surtain leaves for the NFL. Either way, Tide fans should be incredibly excited.
