Alabama Football: Conference-only schedule helps SEC’s Heisman odds

Heisman favorites for Alabama football and the rest of the SEC.

We have plenty of Heisman contenders on the Crimson Tide. However, I see three specific athletes as the frontrunners.

Najee Harris, RB

Najee Harris will be a work horse in the 2020 season after returning for one more year. If the passing game doesn’t develop like Alabama football hopes it will, he will see even more touches. The depth of Alabama’s schedule makes it even more likely for him to have his Heisman moment later in the year.

Mac Jones, QB

Let’s be honest. The quarterback of the best team in the country will always receive at least some Heisman votes. It would take a magical season from Jones to win the Heisman, though. Perhaps if the Tide go 11-0, he excels in the system, and other contenders have lackluster campaigns. However, that appears to be too much to expect for one season.

Jaylen Waddle, WR

Wide receivers likely won’t win the Heisman Trophy. However, Waddle might add enough in special teams to earn some SEC votes. If he has a couple of games similar to his 2020 Iron Bowl performance, then watch out. I wanted to put only one receiver on the list, and Waddle’s return ability put him over Smitty.

Other SEC Heisman contenders

Kyle Trask, QB, Florida

Trask is a trendy pick to be the next Joe Burrow, but he has a long way to go. Potentially adding Alabama to the schedule gives him plenty of chances to prove himself. We’ll see if he can have that shocking season that so many have predicted.

Bo Nix, QB, Auburn

For some reason, a lot of people believe that Bo Nix is a legitimate Heisman contender. I disagree, but we’ll see once the season happens.

As Alabama football goes through the 2020 college football season, these lists will change. However, the updated SEC football schedule leads to a Heisman more than any other conference. We’ll see at the end of the season where we are, but watch out for these stars to shoot their way up the standings.
