Alabama Football: A canceled season would hurt these Tide players most
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football’s top dog needs a college football season.
Mac Jones, QB
Above all, Michael McCorkle Jones needs a college football season. He has finally cemented himself as the team’s starting quarterback, and he has a young buck right behind him in Bryce Young.
If Mac Jones plays out of his mind, he has all of his options in front of him. He could declare for the NFL Draft and play in the Senior Bowl if all goes right, or he could come back for one more season. He could even transfer somewhere if he thought BY was going to steal his spot. If he doesn’t get to play football this year, his options become more bleak. There’s a chance that Bryce Young could slide above him on the depth chart. Without a full year as the start, Mac would either risk losing his job or transfer to a smaller team. Jones doesn’t want that to happen, and neither do Alabama football fans.
This is the most chaotic outcome that could possibly happen. Needless to say, Mac Jones has some skin in the game when it comes to this college football season. He’s patiently waited for three years to become the man under center. On top off the thousands of things that this pandemic has taken away from us as a society (including countless things that are more important than football), it might also take away Mac’s opportunity to become a legend for the Crimson Tide.
Again, no college football hurts a ton of people, and I’m not writing this to say that we have to play football because of these reasons. I understand the severity of the decision that must be made, no matter which way they decide to go. This just shows how much a canceled Alabama football season would hurt the athletes on a macro scale.
