Alabama Football: When Nick Saban speaks all need to listen

Nick Saban held his first Alabama football, fall camp press conference after practice on Monday.

Alabama football, head coach, Nick Saban had much to see early Monday evening. The first fall presser is always a big deal for Crimson Tide fans. Most often what rankles Nick most are depth chart questions, posed after one fall session.

A depth chart rant did not occur on Monday. The new SEC schedule was discussed, There was some information on player injuries. Much of the information was about making sure the players are protected from COVID spread. The University of Alabama and all SEC schools have carefully designed and maintained protocols to reduce virus risk. Nick praised his players for doing a great job of “managing uncertainty” during the summer.

Saban was quick to point out even with all the medical procedures and precautions in place, players do not have to do “anything they are uncomfortable with.” Nick announced the Surgeon General would speak to the Alabama football team Monday night. He also praised the Alabama football, medical team for its efforts in keeping players healthy.

An important detail was included. Players are tested twice a week with daily testing available to every player. Over the last week or two, positive test results were “less than one percent.”

When asked about protecting his own health, Nick said he and his family and the Alabama football staff follow all recommended precautions. He shared a personal story of how he visits with his 88-year-old mother. They sit on park benches, 10 feet apart. When he leaves, Nick tells his mom, “I’m not giving you a hug today because I love you.”

Questioned about students ignoring masks and social distancing, he was careful. He acknowledged the greatness of democracy but said what makes democracy great is “moral integrity.” His careful message was also clear, – protect yourself and others with masks and social distancing.

Everyone is fully recovered from past injuries. Ale Kaho has a minor knee problem and will miss a few days.

Saban said any such conversations will be kept internal to the team and staff. If or when a player decides to make a public statement will be left to the players.

SEC Football 10-Game Schedule

Saban gave his opinion the SEC created the new schedule as fairly as possible. He also reminded he has long been in favor of 10 SEC games.
