If Alabama football wins the SEC Championship, they might bring home a Heisman.
It is almost a guarantee that Alabama football will make it to the SEC Championship. Unless there is absolute chaos in the SEC East, they will face off against the Florida Gators. This one game might be how voters decide who should win the Heisman Trophy.
Both the Crimson Tide and the Gators have great Heisman candidates. For Alabama, Mac Jones is in the driver’s seat. Despite not playing this week, he remains one of the best players in college football. He has picked up where Tua Tagovailoa left off, and he has carried this Alabama football offense. Najee Harris has dominated with touchdowns in the red zone, but Jones throws one of the prettiest deep balls in football. He has done what he needs to so far to be in contention for the Heisman Trophy.
On the flip side, Kyle Trask has been statistically dominant for the Florida Gators. He has lost one game, but he still dominates in both passing yards and touchdowns. He made a statement against the Georgia Bulldogs, and he has his team on the road to a divisional crown.
There are other Heisman candidates, but Jones and Trask are easily the two frontrunners. Trevor Lawrence has missed two games due to COVID-19, and he has not done anything to separate himself so far. While Justin Fields is one of the best players in the country, he simply has too few opportunities to play. He will not compete with other quarterbacks statistically, and he has not done enough per game to jump off of the page.
That leaves Jones and Trask, but how do we separate these candidates? Trask has better stats, but Jones is doing more for a championship contender. Jones also has to share an offense with Najee Harris, and Florida has no running back worth mentioning. Because of this, you will have a genuine debate as to which quarterback deserves the illustrious award.
Thankfully, they will share a football field in Atlanta. The best player in that game will likely break the tie. It might not go directly to the winner of the game, but each player will have an amazing chance to state their case in front of the entire country.
This favors Alabama football and Mac Jones. If Kyle Trask leads the Gators to the College Football Playoff, he will likely win the Heisman Trophy. However, the Crimson Tide defense will be a tough opponent for Trask. They are not as good as they have been in recent memory, but they are getting better every week. Florida’s defense is also lackluster this season. They will also improve, but I believe that Mac Jones has what it takes to dominate against elite opponents. If Mac Jones can handle Georgia’s defense, they can handle whatever the Gators throw at them. As soon as he developed his elite trait, it was game over for the rest of the SEC.
Usually, voters remember November when they vote for the Heisman winner. This season, it is more likely that they will remember December.
