DeVonta Smith is in the Alabama football record books.
Over the past four seasons, we have seen DeVonta Smith make highlight play after highlight play for Alabama football. His name will be all over the record books by the end of the season, but he just broke a big record.
Smitty is now the sole holder of the record for career receiving touchdowns after a nice touchdown catch against Kentucky in the first half. The record was held by Amari Cooper with 31 touchdowns, but DeVonta Smith now has 32.
Smith has been a bright spot for the Alabama offense all season, and he will be even more important as the season progresses. Without Jaylen Waddle, Smith is clearly the top target for Heisman candidate Mac Jones. We will see targets like Miller Forristall and John Metchie get targets, but DeVonta Smith can make practically every catch.
Smith could have easily declared for the 2020 NFL Draft, but he decided to come back for his senior season. He was expected to be a leader off of the field for Alabama football, but nothing will compare to what he does on the field. He automatically impacts how the defense plans to stop Alabama, and it has yet to be enough to fully impede the Crimson Tide.
Now that DeVonta Smith has the record, he will have the rest of his senior season to expand the gap. He will surely get plenty of touchdowns as Mac’s Heisman campaign continues, so his lead in the record books might be insurmountable by the time he graduates.
Alabama football has had plenty of stunning wide receivers over the years. From Julio Jones to Jerry Jeudy, the record books are scattered with some of the best wide receivers in college football history. It is an absolute honor to break any record, but this one means a little more. To have more receiving touchdowns than any of these superstars is insane.
