Takeaways from Alabama football’s win vs. LSU

3. Alabama needs a future receiver to step up

DeVonta Smith might be the best receiver in college football, but his days in Tuscaloosa are numbered. This time next year, he will be playing on Sundays. Jaylen Waddle will almost certainly be joining him. That leaves Alabama with John Metchie and Slade Bolden as upperclassmen. Metchie is a budding star, but he hasn’t proven that he can singlehandedly take a game over like Smitty. Slade Bolden is a great gadget guy, but Alabama needs someone else to step up in 2021.

All season, fans have wanted to see things from their freshmen receivers. Even in a blowout win, they had limited reps against the Tigers. It is very rare for freshmen to not see some reps at receiver, so they will need to learn quickly in 2021.

Alabama has also recruited some great receivers in the 2021 class. It will be interesting to see who gets snaps outside of Metchie and Bolden in the 2021 Alabama football season.

It is obvious that Metchie will be WR1 next season. However, it remains to be seen who else will play a pivotal role in next year’s passing game. In a blowout like this, the fact that we did not see many plays for the freshmen is telling. This is a storyline to watch over the offseason.
