Alabama Football: Former players react to DeVonta Smith’s monster game
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football alumni had a lot to say after DeVonta Smith destroyed LSU.
DeVonta Smith has been the best wide receiver in college football this season. After being the only junior receiver to return from last year’s team, he has dominated for Alabama football. He put on a show against LSU, and some former teammates had something to say about it.
Smitty was a part of a historic recruiting class. He joined the Crimson Tide alongside Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy, making them the best receiver class of all time. This group of receivers called themselves the Ryde Outs, and both of the graduates were active on Twitter last night.
After a dominant first half, Jeudy said that DeVonta Smith deserves to be the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While he might not reach those levels, he has certainly helped his draft stock. Jeudy also released a conversation he had with Smitty before today’s game.

After last year’s loss, you could tell that this game was personal. DeVonta Smith had a monster game last year against the Tigers, but he played even better in 2020. While he did not reach 300 receiving yards, he did have 231 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.
Henry Ruggs also got in on the fun. He was tweeting during the game, and he also asked for a picture of Smith’s iconic one-handed catch in the back of the end zone.

This catch was over Derek Stingley Jr. Fans expected this to be the key matchup of the night. While Stingley was rarely covering Smith, the Alabama football receiver dominated every snap of Saturday’s game.
After this game, a key takeaway is that Alabama football breeds the best receivers in college football. The 2017 recruiting class will likely have two Biletnikoff winners at the end of the year. That doesn’t include the legacy of Julio Jones, Amari Cooper and Calvin Ridley.
DeVonta Smith is one of many stunning receivers for Alabama over the years, and his former teammates certainly have a lot to say about his domination.
