Alabama Football: Why Devonta Smith deserves the Heisman Trophy
Alabama Football: Devonta Smith deserves the Heisman Trophy, and it isn’t even close.
Mac Jones, Kyle Trask, Trevor Lawrence, and Justin Fields have all had spectacular seasons. Their stats are impressive, and they are all in the talks for the Heisman trophy. After Mac Jones near perfect performance against LSU, he jumped into the lead. But there isn’t anyone in the country playing better football than Alabama Football’s Devonta Smith.
Smith had a monster game Saturday night against LSU. He had 231 receiving yards on eight receptions with three touchdowns. His last touchdown reception was one of the most impressive catches of the season. In what originally appeared to be a pass that would sail into the stands, Smith climbed the ladder and brought it down one-handed. The jaw of everyone watching dropped to the floor.
Smitty makes everything he does look easy. He burns every hopeful defensive back in his path. His routes are so clean and sharp, and he has the best hands in the country. His first two touchdowns against LSU were deep balls with a long of 65 yards. He was frequently matched up against one of the best defensive backs in the country in LSU’s Derek Stingley, and Smitty made him look silly all night.
Even when he isn’t the one making the plays, he is opening up plays for others. Opposing defenses have to respect his athleticism. He is frequently double-teamed, which allows his teammates to make the big plays.
On the season he has 1305 yards on 80 receptions averaging 16 yards per catch with 15 touchdowns. HIs total yards are more than 100 more than his closest competition. He also has four more touchdowns than Kyle Pitts who is currently in second.
The most remarkable thing about these stats is who he is playing with. He is on the same offense as Najee Harris, who leads the nation in rushing touchdowns. He also played half the season with Jaylen Waddle, another future first-round draft pick at receiver for the Alabama Football team.
Smitty is sharing the love with his teammates, and he is still putting up video game numbers. It really doesn’t even seem fair for the competition.
There is certainly no disrespect for Mac Jones. He has been impressive all year, but we have a clear-cut Heisman winner in Devonta Smith. It shouldn’t even be close.
