Alabama football’s takeaways in the SEC Championship

3. DeVonta Smith deserves the Heisman Trophy

The wording on this takeaway is very important. I have no clue who will win the Heisman in 2020. Najee had a monster game that vaulted him into the conversation. Mac Jones did plenty to stay near the top of lists. However, DeVonta Smith deserves the award.

It is so hard for receivers to win the Heisman, but Smitty has done more than enough to be in the conversation. He leads college football in almost every category, and his career numbers are stellar. He is all over the Alabama football record book, and he had another monster game against the Gators.

Smitty has improved since Jaylen Waddle went down with an ankle injury. He also deserves credit for stepping up when his teammates needed him the most. He went from a valued weapon to a necessary star, and he has done well with this transition.

The fact that this offense has three Heisman candidates is insane. However, it might discount each of the candidates. The fact that defenses have to stop all three of these guys makes it hard to give them the credit that they deserve.

This might be the case, but I still believe that the Heisman will go to some Alabama player. I would give it to DeVonta Smith, but you could make a case for any of these players.
