Alabama football’s top running back is a true Heisman contender.

Najee Harris has carried on the proud tradition of dominant running backs on Alabama football teams. The Crimson Tide have seen two Heisman Trophy winners, and both have been running backs.

As we wrap up the 2020 college football season, Alabama still has three Heisman contenders. Najee Harris has done what it takes to be in the conversation, but does he deserve to win the trophy?

While we approach Alabama’s last game before the College Football Playoff, let’s break down each player’s case to win the Heisman Trophy, starting with Najee Harris. Here are three reasons why Harris deserves the trophy.

3. Najee leads college football in touchdowns

This stat carries the brunt of Najee’s Heisman case. In only 11 games, Najee Harris has 27 total touchdowns. While Harris might not have a ton of massive plays on the resume, he can find the end zone easier than any other skill player in college football.

You also have to account for the fact that he did this against 11 SEC defenses. From Auburn to Texas A&M, Harris dominated throughout the season against top talent. He didn’t have a single game against an FCS opponent to pad his stats.

Najee Harris was able to do this because of his strength in the red zone. Whenever Alabama football got close to the goal line, they trusted their senior back. With weapons across the board, that shows how good Harris actually is. Alabama could score in plenty of ways, but they still chose to give the ball to Najee Harris. On a team filled with talent, he has stood out all season.
