Who is Alabama football’s most improved player?

Alabama looks a lot better in 2020 than it did last season, which came as a bit of a shock. The Crimson Tide lost their Heisman candidate at quarterback, a Biletnikoff winner at receiver, one of the best offensive linemen in Alabama football history and the fastest player in college football. They were also without four of their starting five defensive backs and both of their starting outside linebackers. They had a new quarterback with practically no offseason, but they still found a way to get better in 2020.

That is thanks to some improvements from returning players, which sparks the debate over Alabama’s most improved player in 2020. Before we select the Crimson Tide’s MIP, let’s look at some honorable mentions.

Mac Jones

Mac has come a long way since he threw two pick-sixes against Auburn in 2019. He is a Heisman candidate, and he is a catalyst for this offense. He makes quicker decisions, and his leadership skills are elite. We started 2020 with a debate as to whether or not Mac Jones should be the starting quarterback. He has now turned into one of the best quarterbacks in Alabama football history.

Jahleel Billingsley

We have seen an increase in production from Billingsley in recent weeks, and he will continue to be a weapon for the Crimson Tide. He is dangerous with the football in his hands, and he can be used in a variety of ways. By the time his college football career is over, he will be considered one of the three best tight ends of the Nick Saban era.

Christian Harris

Harris suffered a trial by fire in 2020. As a true freshman, he was forced to start in the toughest role of Nick Saban’s defense. He did the best that he could, and he showed plenty of potential, but he just wasn’t good enough for what Alabama football needed in 2019.

In 2020, he is now one of the best players on our defense. Thanks to Dylan Moses returning, he has been asked to do less before the snap. He can simply go and make plays, which is when he is at his best. There is still more he can do, but he has looked a lot better as a sophomore.

All of these players deserve credit, but here is Alabama football’s most improved player of 2020.

Most Improved Player: Chris Allen

Chris Allen has overcome a rough injury to become one of the best edge rushers that Alabama has had in a while. He leads the team in tackles for loss and has 6 sacks in 10 games. When he gets to the quarterback, he can do a lot of damage. He has two forced fumbles, but his impact is more than the stat sheet shows.

Allen seems to always be in the right place at the right time. He uses a variety of moves to get to the quarterback, and he can force the opposing team to make bad decisions with the football. Assuming he comes back next year, the outside linebacker position will be stacked.

Plenty of Alabama football players have improved this year. You could give the award to any player mentioned, and there are also some names that I left off of the list. From John Metchie to Will Reichard to Christian Barmore, this team has seen improvement across the board. However, I would give the award to Chris Allen.
