Alabama football’s DeVonta Smith should win the Heisman Trophy.
This season has seen dominance in a variety of ways for Alabama football. One way to quantify their success is by charting the Heisman rankings. Alabama has three of the top 5 candidates for the Heisman and half of the finalists. One of those finalists is DeVonta Smith, and he is the frontrunner.
While the voting is finished, it is still fun to debate who should win the Heisman Trophy. We already stated Najee Harris’s case. While he has been eliminated, we can still debate the other contenders. This is why DeVonta Smith should win the award.
3. He can take over a game with ease
If you want to win the Heisman Trophy as a wide receiver, you have to do something special. The last one to win was Desmond Howard. Amari Cooper was a finalist, but he had practically no chance to win outright.
So, what does DeVonta Smith do that sets himself apart? He has taken over games on multiple occasions. We saw a glimpse of this in 2019 when Smitty scored five receiving touchdowns against Ole Miss. It has gotten even better in 2020. He had over 150 receiving yards in 6 of his 11 games this year. He has scored multiple touchdowns in 7 of his 11 games, and he has scored 3 TDs twice.
No matter who Smitty is facing, he can find a way to dominate. His nicest catch was over Derek Stingley, one of the best corners in college football. From Mississippi State to Auburn, he has repeatedly been the reason why Alabama football has won. He has changed how defenses plan to stop the Tide, and that alone should put him in the Heisman race.
