Reasons why Alabama football’s DeVonta Smith should win the Heisman

1. DeVonta Smith has shattered the record books

Think about all of the great receivers that have played for Alabama football. Julio Jones, Amari Cooper and Calvin Ridley started the string of excellent receivers of the Saban era. We have also seen Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs go in the first round of the NFL Draft. Even with all of these stars, DeVonta Smith has shattered the record books.

Smith has records of all kinds. He has shattered the career receiving touchdown record in the SEC. He had the most receptions in the SEC Championship game on his way to victory. he has the single-season record for reception touchdowns at Alabama despite the shortened season.

If you want to win the Heisman Trophy as a wide receiver, you have to do something extra special. This award has a tendency to go to the best quarterback as opposed to the best player in college football. However, this year might just be different. We have already seen plenty of crazy things in 2020. Why not have a wide receiver win the Heisman Trophy?

The debate for this award is nuanced and cannot be simplified down to a few basic points. However, you have to conclude that DeVonta Smith is the best candidate. Whether you look at stats or the tape, he is the best player in college football.
