Alabama Football: Top 5 storylines for CFP National Championship
By Dakota Cox
What are the top storylines for Alabama football vs. Ohio State?
The 2020 season was a wild one, but we are down to the final two teams competing for eternal glory. Alabama football will be facing off against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the CFP National Championship.
This game will be intriguing for a lot of different reasons. While we are still over a week away from the title game, here are the top storylines for the final game of the college football season.
5. A potential Heisman tour
We are days away from finally figuring out who won the 2020 Heisman Trophy. While it is still uncertain, the Heisman Trophy will almost certainly be coming to Tuscaloosa. DeVonta Smith is the Heisman frontrunner, and Mac Jones is not too far behind him. These are now the only two finalists with a chance to win the title, and they are both on the same team.
The impact of DeVonta Smith has increased over the course of the season. He has saved his best for the final few games, and Alabama football will need all of it against the Buckeyes.
Alabama has a successful history in title games when they have a Heisman winner. Alabama won in 2009 and in 2015 after seeing Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry win the award. Both of those players played pivotal roles in the title game, and Smitty will likely play an even bigger role against Ohio State.
Smitty came back to play one more season with this team, and this will be his final game. Expect an elite performance from the Heisman frontrunner as he proves that he should win the award. If Mac Jones wins the Heisman instead, the storyline will shift to him in a similar context.
