The early favorites for the 2021 Heisman Trophy odds were released. Alabama football has three players to watch.
Since Nick Saban’s arrival, two Alabama football players have hoisted the Heisman Trophy, legends Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry. This season, three Crimson Tide players (DeVonta Smith, Mac Jones, and Najee Harris) finished in the Heisman’s top five. The future winner will come from the university, whether it is Jones or Smith.
The early 2021 Heisman odds are out, and there are three Alabama football players listed. Quarterback Bryce Young, running back Brian Robinson Jr., and wide receiver John Metchie III are among the twenty names mentioned.
The principal name for Alabama fans is Bryce Young at sixth with +1200 odds. The Pasadena, California native arrived in Tuscaloosa as the nation’s top high school dual-threat QB. Backing up Heisman candidate Mac Jones, the true freshman, passed for 156 yards and one touchdown in mop-up time. The great hype following Young is clearly evident as he shows boundless talent.
Once the season ends next Monday night, Young is the clear frontrunner for the starting job. Robbed of spring practice due to COVID-19 protocols, Young’s opportunity to improve is paramount to his continued success. Additionally, Steve Sarkisian, the new Texas Longhorns head coach, is departing for Austin. Whoever Saban decides will inherit the offensive coordinator position must be a great QB developer to ensure Young succeeds and effectively utilizes all his talent.
Brian Robinson Jr. falls in ninth at +1500, followed by Metchie at nineteen with +2400. Robinson, a senior, is eligible to return to the Crimson Tide next season. His numbers on the season are 404 yards rushing and six scores. The number two back in the duo with Harris, Robinson has shown flashes of a great no.1 back.
Sophomore John Metchie III totaled 782 yards and six touchdowns on 44 receptions this season. The Canadian native made an immediate impact after Jaylen Waddle’s injury.
Darkhorse Heisman candidates for Alabama football
Two dark horses to consider are Jase McClellan and Jahleel Billingsley.
If Robinson returns, there is a strong possibility McClellan will split carries with him. Without knowing the severity of Trey Sanders’ injuries, McClellan has dazzled on the field whenever he touches the ball, which should cement him as a key player in next year’s rotation. He owns the Tide’s longest rush on the season with a beautiful 80-yard scamper against Arkansas.
Billingsley has proven he can become a major difference-maker and mismatch for any defender. As senior Miller Forristal departs, Billingsley can step into his role and become a huge target for Bryce Young.
Although another Heisman winner would be nice, a National Championship trophy is a finer achievement.
