Alabama football’s Will Reichard deserved the Lou Groza Award
During the College Football Awards show, the greatest players of the 2020 season get recognized for their triumphs. This has been a historic season for Alabama football, so it made sense that they would rack up on postseason awards. However, one star got snubbed.
Will Reichard was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, the honor that goes to the best kicker in college football. Considering Alabama’s history with kickers, it never felt like the Tide would even have a finalist for this award. In fact, most fans didn’t even know the name of this award.
However, Reichard has changed the narrative about Alabama kickers. He has broken the kicking curse in Tuscaloosa. After years of kicking being the biggest issue with Alabama fans, they are now relieved that they no longer have to worry when a kicker trots onto the field.
Will Reichard made every kick this season. Fans would have settled for making all extra points, but Reichard is also drilling 50-yard field goals. Very few kickers can say that they’ve done that, and none have for Nick Saban.
Despite this historic season, the Lou Groza Award went to Miami’s Jose Borregales. Borregales only missed two field goals this year, so you can’t deny that he is deserving of being a candidate. Still, it is frustrating for Reichard to play so well and get snubbed from this recognition. Even though it might not be surprising, it is still unfair for Reichard.
Thankfully, Reichard still has something bigger to play for. He will be going for a perfect season against Ohio State in the CFP National Championship. Just like you can say with every Tide star, Reichard would trade in all of the individual awards for a ring.
When you look at the best players on Alabama’s roster, you never go to the kicker. Will Reichard has changed that narrative. Even if he got snubbed, Tide fans know how important he is to this team’s success.
