Surprising stats for Alabama football in 2020

The offense has surprised us plenty. Between Will Reichard’s success as a kicker and the amazing job that Smith has done as a returner, the special teams unit has been elite as well. Let’s look at defense.

Alabama already has more sacks than 2019

Sack production wasn’t necessarily elite last year, but fans were worried about how Alabama would fare without Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings. Despite playing in one fewer game, Alabama football already has more sacks than the 2019 squad.

The Tide’s leading returner in sacks was Shane Lee, so the production has come from new faces. Chris Allen and Will Anderson have been dominant on the outside, and both have emerged as the season has progressed. Christian Barmore has found a second gear this season, and Alabama has needed his production.

Josh Jobe has no interceptions

Jobe leads the team in passes defended, but he still doesn’t have an interception. That is a bit surprising given his talent this year. Playing across from Patrick Surtain, Jobe has been targeted by opposing quarterbacks. He’s not a weak link, but teams are so afraid to throw at Surtain. Even with this happening, he has failed to grab a pick all season.

We’ll see if Jobe declares for the NFL Draft later in the year, but I expect him to come back to Tuscaloosa. He isn’t considered a first-round pick, and he still has room to grow.

There's plenty left in the Tide's tank. dark. Next

Alabama football has plenty to be excited about when we look back on this season. We’ll see Monday if they cap it off with a National Championship.
