Alabama Crimson Tide: Scouting The 2021 Quarterback Room
The Alabama Crimson Tide are losing a record-breaking quarterback from the 2020 team in Mac Jones to the 2021 NFL Draft. The junior 6’3 214-pound passer is leaving Tuscaloosa early for the professional ranks after completing 311 of 402 attempts for 4,500 yards with 41 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2020. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy race for his great season helping the Alabama Crimson Tide win the National Championship. Mac is projected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft. The Crimson Tide have the tough task of replacing Jones at quarterback in 2021 and will look to a talented quarterback room. The Alabama Crimson Tide has three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for the 2021 football season. Let’s check out the quarterbacks for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2021.
Alabama Crimson Tide Sophomore Bryce Young
The five-star freshman Bryce Young served as the Alabama Crimson Tide backup quarterback last season completing 13-22 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown over nine games. Young didn’t get many opportunities to play up to his five-star potential because Mac Jones had a record-breaking year. Bryce did have some great moments in 2020. He hit Heisman winning wide receiver, DeVonta Smith on a 35-yard pass against the Kentucky Wildcats. In the same game he connected with Smith again on a roll-out, 18-yard pass for a touchdown as the Crimson Tide won 66-3. Alabama Crimson Tide fans should expect much from Bryce Young in 2021.
Alabama Crimson Tide Redshirt Sophomore Paul Tyson
The 6’5. 228-pound pocket passer Paul Tyson has taken seven snaps under center in two years at Alabama. He’s spent time in the program and is progressing in the Crimson Tide system. In 24 games as the starter at Hewitt Trussville High School, Tyson threw for more than 6,500 yards and 69 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions. He has a powerful arm and offers great depth at the quarterback position for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He might or might not beat out Bryce Young for the starting job
Alabama Crimson Tide Freshman Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe comes to Tuscaloosa from Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas. Milroe is filled with potential and should have a bright Crimson Tide future. In his three-year varsity career at Tompkins, he won 31 games, completed 321 of 541 passes for 5,400 yards and 53 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Milroe added an additional 1,208 yards on the ground, with 22 rushing scores. New Crimson Tide, Offensive Coordinator, Bill O’Brien can style an offense around the dual-threat abilities of Jalen Milroe and Bryce Young. It will be interesting to see how the Alabama Crimson Tide offense changes in 2021 to incorporate more frequent rushing threats from Young and Milroe.
Even with Mac Jones gone, the Alabama Crimson Tide has talent at the quarterback position. In the quarterback room and on the field, there will be a real competition between Bryce Young, Paul Tyson, and Jalen Milroe. Had Steve Sarkisian remained in Tuscaloosa, Young might have started spring practice with an advantage. With a new OC, each guy starts from the same place.
There’s plenty of potential for success between these three quarterbacks and the Alabama Crimson Tide should be able to find a suitable replacement for Mac Jones in the 2021 college football season.
