Alabama football learned a lot from their championship season

It has only been a matter of weeks since Alabama football dominated Ohio State to win their sixth national championship of the Nick Saban era. This season, fans witnessed history in the making. From individual records to an undefeated season, we saw one of the best teams to ever play college football.

The analysis of this season can take you down a lot of paths, but they all lead back to the notion that this team was excellent as they overcame unprecedented adversity. Between DeVonta Smith winning the Heisman and Najee Harris hurdling defenders on a weekly basis, the offense was loaded. We won’t see anything like that for a long time.

Every completed season adds context to the legacy of Alabama football. What did we learn from the 2020 season that we will use to define this team for the foreseeable future?

3. DeVonta Smith is the greatest Alabama receiver ever

This season saw all sorts of records being shattered. DeVonta Smith earned plenty of records by himself. Whether they were season records or career ones, we have seen the greatest wide receiver to ever play for Alabama football.

That is high praise. Just in the Nick Saban era, we have seen stars like Julio Jones and Amari Cooper. In Smith’s own recruiting class, Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs joined the squad. Now that the dust has settled on all of their collegiate careers, DeVonta Smith stands above the rest.

What really separated him as a receiver was his choice to return for his senior year. In 2020, he won the Heisman Trophy and became the face of the team. No matter how defenses tried to stop him, he dominated. He stepped up when the team needed him, and he is a major reason why the Tide won the national championship.
