Alabama Football: Attrition among the Crimson Tide 2020, assistant coaching staff, may not have ended.

Just when Alabama football fans thought staff turnover had ended, another Tide assistant may be leaving. Nick Saban has hired four new assistant coaches this offseason. He may need to hire another one.

Friday morning, Matt Zenitz of al.com reported Crimson Tide cornerbacks coach, Karl Scott is a top target for Mike Locksley at Maryland. Locks is looking for a new Defensive Coordinator so joining the Terrapins staff would be a promotion for Scott.

Alabama football will have no problem coaching defensive backs should Scott leave. Nick Saban has probably had ‘quiet’ conversations with two or three potential hires, knowing Scott would be in high demand. There are always plenty of young, secondary coaches anxious to join the Crimson Tide staff and learn from Nick Saban. Saban, for all his accomplishments and duties, is still a position coach for the Crimson Tide. He is widely recognized as ‘the’ best defensive back coach in football.

Losing Karl Scott would be disappointing in terms of recruiting. The Alabama Crimson Tide already lost the No. 1 recruiter for the ’21 class when Charles Huff became the Head Coach at Marshall. Nick Saban lobbied some of his West Virginia connections to help Huff get the job.

The second-best recruiter for the 2021 class is Karl Scott. If Scott is offered and takes the Maryland position, he will be the third top recruiter Nick Saban has lost this offseason. Former Crimson Tide assistant, Jeff Banks, who Steve Sarkisian hired, is ranked No. 5 on the same list.

Concerned Alabama football fans need not be alarmed. Nick Saban’s two most recent hires, Robert Gillespie and Jay Graham are highly respected for their recruiting abilities.

Mike Locksley already has another of the nation’s best recruiters on staff in defensive line coach, Brian Williams. Adding Karl Scott would give Maryland some serious recruiting star power.

Getting top players to sign with Maryland is much tougher than bringing them to the Crimson Tide. The reputation of Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide gives Saban’s assistants great opportunities to make names for themselves on the recruiting trail.

Nick Saban was pleased to bring in Scott three seasons ago. He will, no doubt, hate to lose him, but Saban has always been supportive of assistants taking advantage of promotion opportunities.

Scott to Maryland makes sense for the Terrapins, but so far, there are no confirmed reports he has been offered the job.
