Alabama Football: Nick Saban separating himself among fellow GOATs
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football has the greatest coach across all sports
Alabama football has a history of success in multiple eras, but Nick Saban has clearly been the best to ever coach in Tuscaloosa. After winning his seventh title and his sixth with the Crimson Tide, there is no doubt that Nick Saban is the greatest of all time in the history of college football.
You cannot compare Saban to peers because he has none in his sport. You have to compare him with fellow GOATs. With a few seasons wrapping up across all sports, it is clear that he is still separating himself.
When you think of the greatest coaches in the history of sports, plenty of names come to mind. Bill Belichick has more titles than any coach in the history of the NFL. Gregg Popovich has won five titles with the San Antonio Spurs, but Phil Jackson won 11 combined with two separate dynasties. While no one will come close to matching John Wooden’s reign in college basketball with the current state of the game, Coach K is seen as the greatest head coach of this generation in college basketball. These are Saban’s peers, and he is separating himself.
It is hard to compare the difficulty of winning a Super Bowl compared to a national championship in college football or college basketball. That being said, Saban has more titles than Coach K, Popovich or Belichick. Also, he succeeded during trying times.
While Belichick is certainly the greatest coach in the history of the NFL, he failed to bring New England to the postseason this year after losing Tom Brady in free agency. His record without Brady is abysmal, and he will need to do something in the next few years to prove that he can win without the greatest player in the history of football.
Similar things can be said about Popovich. He is a great coach and won in different eras, but the Spurs have struggled in recent years since losing Kawhi Leonard.
Coach K has five championships with Duke, but he has been the head coach of the Blue Devils since 1980. Four decades with one team is impressive, but he has failed to win a ring since 2015. He is also suffering one of the worst seasons in the history of his tenure at Duke, and the Blue Devils might actually fail to reach the NCAA Tournament this year.
While Phil Jackson hasn’t coached basketball for a while now, he still hurt his legacy when he took over the New York Knicks. He was supposed to save the Knicks, but he failed to bring any progress to one of the worst franchises in the NBA. The bar was low, but he was still fired.
While almost every GOAT of this generation is seeing their legacy fall, Saban’s is continuing to rise. He signed the greatest recruiting class in the history of college football, and he is ready to raise the Alabama football standard once again.
Even when you compare him to other legends, Saban sets himself apart. His work with Alabama football proves that he is the greatest coach alive.
