Alabama Football: 2021 NFL mock draft after the Super Bowl
By Dakota Cox
12. San Francisco 49ers: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
This is a great situation for both parties. The 49ers have an offensive genius as their coach, weapons galore and an incredibly young defense. In Super Bowl LIV, they proved that Jimmy G would not be enough to win it all. With his contract, they can pivot and replace him.
While I don’t think that San Francisco will specifically target a quarterback in the draft, they will surely scout the players and see how the board shakes. They could trade up if someone falls. If someone as talented as Trey Lance falls to them, they might pull the trigger.
San Francisco has been incredibly successful, but Kyle Shanahan has yet to pick a quarterback. The team traded for Garoppolo because of the value, but they haven’t drafted a top-tier quarterback with the hope of turning him into the franchise guy. This would be their chance to do just that.
Lance has all sorts of potential, and his stats are solid. However, the level of competition hurts him. He only got to play in one game this season, and he did not look great. It isn’t fair to judge him on just one game, but the fact remains that his sample size is pretty small. He needs to shine at his pro day. If he does not, he could easily fall down the board.
Either way, the 49ers need to have a new quarterback relatively soon. If the staff likes whoever is available here, they could easily take Jimmy G’s replacement.
