Alabama Football: 2021 NFL mock draft after the Super Bowl
By Dakota Cox
2. New York Jets: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
The Jets have some tough decisions to make. Due to terrible leadership in recent years, they have failed to truly assess Sam Darnold as a franchise quarterback. With his contract winding down, they have to decide if they want to build around him or draft a quarterback of the future.
For money reasons alone, I think they have to move on from Darnold. He could probably get some return on the trade market, and the Jets could start the new regime off with a new quarterback.
They have plenty of options, but I’m going with Zach Wilson. Wilson is a great quarterback with a wide range of skills. He is mobile in and out of the pocket, and he has one of the strongest arms in this class. He is a highlight waiting to happen.
The one issue with Wilson is experience. Since he played for BYU, he did not face adequate competition regularly. His ineligibility for the Senior Bowl hurt this as well, so the Jets are having to bank on the belief that he can produce in the NFL without tough competition in college. However, they have cap space and draft assets to build a team around him. If he pans out, the Jets might finally be able to turn the season around.
