Alabama Football: 2021 NFL mock draft after the Super Bowl
By Dakota Cox
3. Miami Dolphins: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
Finally, an Alabama football player is taken off of the board. The first Tide player this year is expected to be DeVonta Smith. Smitty won the Heisman Trophy after an electric season, and he has every skill you could hope to find in a receiver.
While Smith isn’t the fastest, his long legs help him separate with every stride down the field. His routes are smooth, and he has the best hands in this draft class. While he is undersized, he is an aggressive receiver who fights at the catch point.
This would pair Smith with Tua Tagovailoa, his former quarterback with Alabama football. This pairing paid off in Tuscaloosa, and the chemistry would be potent from the first day of the season. Assuming Miami doesn’t trade Tua, they need to give him weapons offensively. Smith is the best skill player in the class, and he would play well in this offense.
While Miami might go with a slot receiver instead, Smith adds value on the outside. Critics will use Smith’s size as a knock, but it didn’t impact him during the Alabama football season. He overcomes any disadvantages with determination and grit, and he would bring that mentality to Miami.
