Alabama football players who exceeded 3 star ranking: 15. Glen Coffee

  • Fort Walton Beach, FL
  • Running Back (2005-2008)
  • 2005 Recruit Ranking: No. 419 Ranked Player in the Nation
  • 2008 All-SEC First Team
  • No. 6 Alabama Record Book for Single Season Rushing Yards

This lengthy rendition of achievements of Alabama football players tells some great stories. Glen Coffee’s story is also about achievement. There is more to Glen’s story, much more.

Coffee was the first power back of the Nick Saban, Alabama football era. He rushed for over 2100 yards at Alabama even though he had less than 170 carries leading up to his final season.

In 2008, starting, but splitting time with Roy Upchurch and Mark Ingram, Coffee rushed for 1385 yards. He left school a year early, one season short of winning a national championship.

Coffee was drafted by San Francisco in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Backing up Frank Gore, Coffee had limited action in his first NFL season.

Before his second season, Coffee abruptly retired from football, saying he had lost his love for the game. As reported by Task and Purpose, a publication that focuses on military veterans, Coffee explained his NFL exit.

"“I just felt like the league and that path wasn’t for me, I just knew that I didn’t want to waste, for me, my younger years doing something that I didn’t want to do. That was kind of my viewpoint on the situation.”"

Coffee joined the military in 2013, went to Ranger school and became a paratrooper.
