Alabama football players who exceeded 3 star ranking: 30. D.J. Hall

  • Fort Walton Beach, FL
  • Wide Receiver (2004-2008)
  • 2004 Recruit Ranking: No. 620 player in the nation
  • No. 2 Alabama Record Book for Career Receptions (194)
  • No. 5 Alabama Record Book for Single-Season Receptions (67)

Hall played as a true freshman in 2004, catching 17 passes. In 2005 he led the Tide with 48 catches and five touchdowns.

In 2006 Hall went over 1000 yards in receiving with a team-leading 57 receptions.

Despite a sometimes antagonistic relationship with Nick Saban in 2007, Hall pulled in 63 receptions and scored six touchdowns.

However fans choose to define what was lacking in D. J. Hall, talent catching the football was never in doubt.

Hall went undrafted in 2008 but he signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Giants. The Giants waived him before the end of the summer and he became a practice squad member of the Oakland Raiders a few months later.

Hall’s toughness was consistently in question with NFL scouts. The line that “he wouldn’t go over the middle, even with a hundred dollar bill laying on the turf” has been repeated so often it is impossible to assign it attribution.

The tales of Hall’s personal failings are disappointing. None of them are recounted here.

He wandered around the Canadian League and the Arena League for a couple of seasons before the end of his football career.
